White-tail Deer and 1080

Postby Scribe » Tue Jul 19, 2016 8:58 am

Waikato Times 18th July 2016.
Looks like there is a subtle effort to shift the blame for the demise of this iconic species onto hunters. This herd has been in existence since 1905 and been doing fine despite the hunting pressure. In 2006, 2009, and 2014 the area these deer inhabit had 1080 dropped into it. It is a RHA (Recreational Hunting Area) and despite the submissions made by many interested groups including the Game Action Council, the 'Powers That Be' refused to apply deer repellent.
Why you would have to ask, If the deer themselves were not the target why would they not add deer repellent. Image

The by-kill of fallow deer from 1080 pellets is estimated to be between half and two thirds (Nugent and Yockney, 2004).

The by-kill of red deer using 1080 carrots ranges from 5% to 93% (Eason et al, 2011).

Interestingly the poisoners seemed to have killed about and equal number of possums and deer in this drop.Image.

There is not a lot of difference between the two if you ask me. Whereas DOC would prosecute a hunter they would protect a rustler.
