2017 Season.

Postby Happy » Fri May 05, 2017 10:50 am

Well its upon us. Barry Beretta just got a good clean. Off at 11 am to go set up and put decoys out at the pond.

Have a safe enjoyable opening day everyone and look forward to the reports.

Great foggy start to the day here but now we getting sunburn... :roll:

Enjoy and play safe !! ;)

Pitch black outside, 3 degrees, Man I'm freezing cold;
My age is creeping up on me, and boy Im feeling old.
But the sky starts to lighten, once black turns to blue;
My heart beats a little faster, my energy and strength renew
Then I see the ducks in the distance, take off for their morning flight;
I no longer notice the cold, as I keep the ducks in sight.
Slowly I start to call, I see ducks look my way;
They're checkin out my decoy spread, and the safety that's on display.
They circle once, they circle twice, Then they cup their wings;
They are going to land, what happiness this brings.
Ten feet or so from water, just before they land;
I bring shotgun to my shoulder, and steady it with my hands;
I squeeze the trigger slowly, and let my steel shot fly;
My aim is true, my shot is good, I watch ducks fall from the sky.

Well that's opening weekend over again.

We did slightly better than last year. Weather was not helpful as beautiful sunny day

Went back Sunday morning quick shoot then cleaned up and moved out.

Went to the home pond Sunday Arvo . We always take a rifle there for pest control

The dogs will usually chase out a rat or two so having a 22. or as was this case a .204 is sometimes handy.

Nice view from up here

May 2017 2.JPG

We just sitting talking and see suddenly the cows over in the paddock chasing something black.
Thought cat no to big dog nah .It zapped under the hedge and stayed just out of the cows reach.
Finally the cows buggered off and out he pops. Hey its an escaped pig. Wild little bugger on a mission

He was running to the palm kernel trailer fast as ...

264 Meters had been dialled up in case he came out

Midget makes it look easy as he plants a 32 V Max into its head... All over rather quickly ..

May 2017 4.JPG

That was a pretty cool way to end the weekend...

That .204 is for sale if any one wants one. I have a new one coming that's got sport profile barrell instead of 25mm
It is a real shooter this one in very nice nick . Has of course some special bits ...

ditto. Pretty quite for us on Thornton Lagoon. 6 mallards ,1 Parrie and a Pheasant for the weekend. It was the same all over the lagoon, number way down . Some shot OK but it took all day for them. I believe the Edgecumbe floods kept the birds in the flooded maize paddocks and as there is water and food there, that's where they stayed. Got a visit from the F/G guys and a police man whilst we had finished and were having a beer and lunch on the sand dunes. Very pleasant indeed.

Well the glorious first weekend in May has come and gone and what a weekend it was.

Sat morning was fine and clear but we always shoot well on these days. There was a solid conveyor belt of ducks from 3000ft up right down to our pond. Some with set wings descending at a rate of knots from a great height to the ones flaring above the willows with their legs down eyes set on the decoys.

Early on Sat we set out on a green heads only campaign and by lunch time I thought the best thing to do was to go for a sleep. Dogs were absolutely exhausted and decided to do the same but the first quack from the callers and they would bolt outside in case they missed something. My dog is still exhausted this morning and is limping on her two front feet.
Sprained toes from catching ducks among the willow roots.

The water in the swamp was still high and you could see from the rubbish caught in the trees from the big flood of 2017. It was 6 foot above the current pond height. God bloody well knows what would of happened if we had have been in the swamp when the flood came through, especially if it came through at night. There would have been some underpants that would have needed to be taken off and buried I will tell you that for nothing. The swamp is a sinister place at any time.

Well done Dundee. I am really glad that Seans lab has turned out well. It adds so much to a day on the water when you have a good retriever.
