Out the front.

Postby veitnamcam » Wed Sep 16, 2015 9:13 pm

Got out of the estuary this evening and "out the front" to try for a snap, the wee trawlers have been goin up and down the beach for a few weeks now.

It is still too early really, water temps are -1deg on this time last year.....but I just want to catch a snapper

Weather was pretty poor for a start...infact I need my bloody head read going 4km offshore in a 10footer in those conditions, thankfully it eased as I thought it would.

I had the hell burly trail out, had dropped a long line, and dropped a net, and running two rods one with a flasher ledger rig and one as a strayline.

End result for a couple of hours fishing, ledger rig one big gurnard, stray line one spiky dog, long line one spiky dog, net one small monk fish.

Bit disappointing but was what I was expecting.....but you dont know if you dont try.

Think I will stick to the estuary for a month or so till water temps come up.

Not much happening fish wise here. Just had net restrung so I am waiting for some sign that the fish are there. No sign of the flounder fishermen working yet. Same with the Whitebait, we are just waiting , a few biggish inunga's seen up the river but that's all.

Good luck with your snapper fishing Cam, you will have to come up and try the Firth one day.

The number of people fishing from the rock out front tells me that the fish are out there but the weather forcast shows at least 5 days of wind. I guess the equinox is with us now for a month or more so no setting the net in the near future anyway.

I wonder where all the flounder are this year Like everything including the whitebait and the snapper they are late. Last year I was catching so many that besides feeding everybody around here I could even take a bunch to the Forum meet up at the Sika show. This year the biggest catch of flounder was two.

Yea i would love to fish some of the north island. Especialy for kingfish.
Water temps here were a later than last year to rise but i think last year was early.

Out the front with a mate in his slightly larger dingy sat evening. Fishing was exceptionally slow only keeping two huge kahawai.
They will be in the smoker soon.

Nothing wrong with a couple of smoked Kahawai VC. I haven't had fish in too long.
