Sighting in....

Postby Packhorse » Sun Dec 06, 2015 5:17 pm

I'm gonna put this up there n see if the knowledgeable heads here on the forum can help me. I've just spent some time running some rounds through my .223. Main purpose was to work out where my 200 metre POA was. To say the least.....oh oh that's not good. I borrowed a mates bipod to eliminate what factors I could n decided cos I had three different types of ammo to put them through at 50m, 100m and 200m.

Ammo was Barnaul 55g sp
Sellier and Belliot (not sure)
Federal FMJ 55g

Rifle Tikka M595 1 in 12 twist (Google research)

Firing position prone with bipod n hand under butt. My firing position would change but always the same set up. Weather was quite breezy shots were fired 9 then check target 9 again check target n 9 again. Interval was longer between last two lots of 9 as I walked n checked targets n moved firing mounds(as such)

Now the results: 50 n 100 metres

Reasonably happy minute of goat/deer n most of my shots are done at theses distances.

200 m

Now I'm worried. I've a suspicion but would like other ideas in what direction I should proceed. Anyone ?

Whats worrying you

The federal is slow

The s&b slowish and the barnaul slowest

Quite normal results

Even a higher bc projectile like a 60g nosler ballistic tip at 3100fps is 3.23 inches low at 200 yrds when zeroed at 100 yrds.

It's not the zero I'm worried about. It's the spread. I thought it might have been a bit tighter....or is it a unrealistic expectation...
Most probably it's not the bat picture but only one federal on target, s&b ok with a flyer n Barnaul a 6" (or more) drop n 4" between the two on target.

From what I can make out a 55g in a 1 in 12 twist is ok?

I couldn't answer those questions without shooting the targets with that rifle myself

That was my first thought. To be fair has been at times less than perfect cleaning regime and quite possibly come back to bite me on the arse. Have given it a clean though n shined light down it can't see anything outstanding but my knowledge is not that great. Just not sure if should go for a fancy borescrub or take it to a smith so that they can tell me what's required.

Or gunslick foaming bore cleaner

Both very effective at cleaning rifle barrels internally
