I want a wee cannon.... please help

Postby Bean » Sun Oct 04, 2015 8:26 pm

I have some free time and a variety of 1045 at work....

I would like a common caliber, when people talk of .40 .45 .50 and.58 etc what is the actual bore diameter? I would like to make something that can take a common patched ball. probably smoothe bore initally but who knows.

What wall thickness plus safety would be required for 1045, I can go to 41.... but prefer lower yield vs boom.

Will make a wheel gun, wicks pans or caps - I like the first and last.

Yes I will make wheels and there will be a "show" so who is in with constructive help?

Dunno, got some 75 and 100 dia, was thinking 50mm od fin around 250 - 300 long, they used to use cast bronze and chuck round rocks FFS

Bean

I've made a Cannon and a Motar, both using 4140.

Both fire Golfballs out of sight at a great rate on knots however the same principles apply no matter what calibre you choose.

I use FFG black powder but the general rule of thumb is the greater the bore diameter the coarser the Black Powder and the smaller the bore diameter the finer the grade.
I also use Black Powder fuses which are available here

Please make sure you have done your research carefully for the type of cannon you want to make or you may just be making a pipe bomb

Check out Greybeards Outdoors Black Powder Mortar & Cannon Pages there's a wealth of information that you can use to safely design and make your Cannon.

Thanks for the input been doing some homework, seems anything is safe as long as you scale down the plans?

Any rule of thumb for bore to ball clerance.
Patched balls anyone
Smaller the hole the more I hate boring it, the inerweb mentioned 3/8 - 9.5 mm wall as a safe factor
Found some 40 dia 4140 @ wk is this suitable for a 3/4 bore? also some bronze for wheels etc
Really want 50 -60 and an inch bore but can start small I suppose

Inch ball bearing vs car door.

We just opened it up intill a patched ball could be pushed in with only slight resistance.

I like the way it doesn't buck and has little muzzle rise. This little baby just runs smoothly back on its carridge.

Does the chrony say 580 odd metres per second.

This information I have given you below is a guide only .... Please make sure you complete your own research to confirm.
You may also want to consider over engineering your cannon just to be on the safe side.

Rules of Thumb for Making Cannon

Cannon external Dia = 1.5 x bore diameter
i.e. in a 40mm OD bar you could have a maximum bore dia of 26.6mm

Powder chamber needs 2x bore dia behind the powder chamber.
I.e. if your bore dia and powder chamber is 26.6mm then you'll need the bar to extend at least 53.2mm past the end of the powder chamber.

Shot to Bore clearance is usually 39/40ths
i.e. Bore Dia = one 40th bigger than Shot Dia.

You wont need to patch cannon shot but you will want to use wadding to hold the powder in place in the powder chamber.
Stale bread is good cannon wadding. It is biodegradable and wont set fire to the grass like paper wadding will

Or you can use baggies.

Check out how I make my foil baggies here.
