Have enough gear for the trips i'm capable of (can lend a pack and wet weathers from the 90's)
Done a lot of trips in my early 20's so bush savy but now getting food round
Have a Suzy Jimny so cheap enough to get there and not too shy offroad


Can fill a hut with bad jokes and farts in a single breath,
Honestly not sure why I have to push my company too much.....

So have 3 days 2 nights in the Lewis Wed to Fir. Can anyone put me onto a site that has weather for this area - had a man look but no joy from what I can work out I will be fine.

Picked a spot thin on bridges and huts, spoke to a man in the know who told me about Kiaks instead mentioning 1080 and a certain helicopter pilot who apparently cannot read maps and finds himself picking the eyes out of waro free areas from the sky....

But a bloke has to find out for himself and I don't go hunting to look at dudes in high vis - the CBD is much closer if that was my thing.

Why aren't these waro dudes required to carry some gsp logging kit - the stuff must cost f-all by now and the hours would have to stack up with flight time so they couldn't just switch it off like dozel k's in a 4wd........

And if the holidays are getting you down at least you don't have the inlaws at your house for another 3months

I have always used Metvuw 'bean' old chap or Met service. There may be better out there. Looks like you are out amounst it. I am envious. Do give us a good account of what has been seen and shot

Tomorrow is wood day for me. For the first time in 9 years I have a wood stove again. So a bit of hard and honest yakker wont do me any harm after all I have eaten lately. Chainsaw has had a clean and sharpen and even the axe has had a tidy and a bit of a sharpen. All its cut for years has been dogs bones.

Enforcement Officers PPPHHHFFFT. One evidently came up to look at new track in the making. From Waikato Regional Council. Said farmer could take out a big Puriri tree. Was surprised when told it was a native.

With a couple of branches carefully removed the puriri is now a nice feature of the new track.

So a summary of my 2 days away.

Leaving Chch late (8am) 30th and striking holiday traffic I arrived in the Lewis around 11. Parking the car in the scrub and lacing up my boots I crossed the boyle below where the doubtful meets it. Being out of practise it was faster and deeper than I judged and I was fortunate to keep my feet on the bottom and my boys dry.

With mid to late twentys and an easterly bellowing up the valley and the grass knee high it was a glorious day full of promise. A valley you would have once been able to swat them with a tennis racket. 4k of basically poled route pasture turned into toitoi, matogauri small ammounts of broadleaf and beech for the last 2.

When dropping my pack for my drink bottle I realised the straps of the pack I had taken had come adrift from the pack apart from the very top and waist belt (no wonder it was a little uncomfey). Rookie move 1 check over your 25yo hallmark pack before leaving. In my defense I have a smaller 60?lt one of a similar vintage I usually use.

Upon arriving at the Doubtful Bivvy I decided the brocuer was not an accurate representation... think door not shutting properly - tarp where window was and chimney propped up with warratarh but still poked on an angle, open one side and filled with rocks. I knew I would not be lonely tonight reading the intentions book with numerous talk of sandflys, rats and mice. I may sound precious to some but if I had of brought a tent I would have buggered off and used it.

Shouldering my day bag I carried on upstream with the wind at my back after maybe a k I started climbing and came across older sign it petered out so I climbed before cutting back into the wind and dropping down to the hut for tea. The beach was very dry underfoot but very enjoyable and certainly better than Chateaux Rathole. After a Kaweka meal I snuck out to watch a flat only to be rained off back to the hut.


I was up early after a nippy night deciding to cut my trip short gap it home the 31st after reading about low numbers in the hut book including a comment spotting 19 gutbags and heads on the tops of a waro free zone. Influencing my choice included dangerously low insect repellent, shady digs, a pookied pack and a fitness level of zero.5

Ditching my pack partway back another promising terrace section was bush stalked before recrossing the bolye and home for ham sandwiches and brownie points.

I feel the deer are there in low numbers for various reasons despite the abundance of feed.
I would return and fly camp from just over the river to 2k in as that is where I saw the most sign.
Despite warning sings I didnt encounter a single wasp possibly dut to the cold spring.
There is a healthy population of hares up there the size of small greyhounds.

Overall I had a fantastic time, wonder why I took so long to get back into it and cant wait to head out again.
