Tarawera Roar trip

Postby Happy » Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:47 pm

Sun 21st on the way

image.jpeg

Few hours later cross the river

image.jpeg

Few Ks and views later

image.jpeg

And found the hut !!

image.jpeg

Nice and early arrival time so what else to do but go for a walk.
Plenty of sign and found a hind on a slip which we watched for a while before deciding the retrive would be near impossible so back to the hut and an early night

Next day quick ride to a ridge and the roar was well on .Stags being noisy in all directions.
Found this in the middle of no where.

image.jpeg

Also an old deer trap not far away . Stalked a couple of stags till we got busted off after quite a lot of work (read heaps ha ha ) then late arvo back to base

Next day headed back into same zone. Big climb up to the tops.

image.jpeg

Awesome place flat open stalking with sign everywhere

image.jpeg

Got onto a heap of noises in all directions and yep busted again ! ! It sounded like a
Train smash going past. Blink and you missed it
So we wandered a wee way further and then crash bang Porky pig dropped in (and out)
Fat little thing

image.jpeg

Not that light either to tell the truth.
Back to base to hang it and relax .

On the way the next story started

Came past this slip.

image.jpeg

150 or so meters across the river. A healthy spiker didn't know we existed.
Stumpy was ready and did his part

image.jpeg

Off the shoulder bang and he dropped real hard and we watched as he got hung up then slid past then hung up then slid past till bingo a solid thump in to something

Oh oh. That's a long way to the river ford then a big walk. GPS the spot and away we went

Left the quad over the ford then walked down the river

image.jpeg

Then down some more
image.jpeg

Then down some more
image.jpeg

Then down some more
image.jpeg

Till you guessed it further again
image.jpeg

And finally.
image.jpeg

By now we had a one and half hour walk just to get to the quad
Took the back half and beat the feet to arrive back at base after dark.

Next minute when telling the guys wher it came from I got promptly advised that 50 mtrs from the shooting point there was a track down the cliffs to within 50 meters of the shot
Bugger . So next morn I went down there and got the front half and so ended up with a lot of great meat in the safe.

And that was it. The other guys did very well we all chased it pretty hard and these were the rest of the results

image.jpeg

Great four days great company great results

Good work and a very good report.

Bugger about the long walk for the recovery, bet you won't get caught like that again in this area.

I've done that myself in unfamiliar country ...... more than once ;)

But it all adds to the adventure of the trip.

Cheers
Pete
